Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Celebration Event - SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO: San Francisco Chinatown Hosts 19th Annual Autumn Moon Festival Street Fair September 19th - 20th, 2009

Autumn Moon Festival brings music, cuisine, and culture
to the streets of San Francisco

Chinatown's Most Attended Annual Festival to Celebrate 19th Year

SAN FRANCISCO – July 27, 2009 Now in its 19th year, the Chinatown Merchants Association gets set to present the annual Autumn Moon Festival on the weekend of September 19-20, 2009, from 11am to 6pm each day. Chinatown's historic Grant Avenue will again be transformed into an Asian theme park with over 200 art and crafts booths, food concessions, and nonstop street and stage entertainment. This celebration will take place on Grant Avenue between California and Broadway, as will Pacific Street between Stockton and Kearny streets. Admission is absolutely free and everyone is welcome.

The Moon Festival, Chinatown’s best-attended annual event for several years running, marks a significant holiday on the Chinese lunar calendar. To mark its celebration, several stages throughout Chinatown will feature a variety of live entertainment acts. Among the performers this year will be a host of Asian-themed dancers and drummers, traditional and contemporary musicians including martial artists, and magicians. Hourly lion dance performances will take place along famous Grant Avenue. To encourage plenty of picture taking at the Moon Festival during that weekend, the Chinatown Merchants Association and the Chinatown Photo Society will sponsor the second annual Moon Festival photo contest. All amateur photographers are invited to register for the contest and a chance to win the top cash prize of $500.00. For more information, please contact Ben Lee at 415-515-2744 or email: chinatownphoto@gmail.com. Applications are also available online at www.chinatownphoto.org.

Movie buffs will enjoy the Festival’s first ever “mini” film festival. Starting at 11:30a.m. the films, “Slanted Screen”, “You Don’t Know Jack” and “Anna May Wong - Frosted Yellow Willows” will be shown at the Four Seas Restaurant on Saturday and Sunday. Despite the dismal economy, many of the Festival’s regular sponsors have returned to participate in the Autumn Moon Festival. Major Sponsor, Safeway, will again offer tasty food samples. Other sponsors will join Chinatown merchants in presenting a variety of special offers, activities, arts and crafts and food along the main route. As always, the Festival’s many street vendors will offer visitors the best shopping around from plants to housewares and clothes and of course, mooncakes!

Festival organizers welcome three new sponsors: Major sponsor, Allstate and Participant sponsors, U.S. Bank and Zipcar.

On Sunday, the Festival attendees will be entertained for two hours from 3-5 pm by a popular band, Pulse. The famous Dragon will close the festivities at 5pm on Sunday. Attendance at the Moon Festival is always high, so the public is encouraged to use BART or MUNI to reach Chinatown.
